Appledore & Instow

Two villages sitting astride the River Torridge

Sitting astride the River Torridge the two villages are linked from April to October by a ferry sailing at high water.

Appledore boasts tiny fishing cottages and narrow streets to explore. Its charm lies in its fishing roots with regular vessels leaving the quayside on a daily basis – look out for signs along the Quay. Appledore is also home to a number of popular annual events – the Appledore Book Festival draws visitors from across the country and features talks and activities with a range of acclaimed international authors.

Instow is a popular destination for cyclists with the Tarka Trail following the old railway line through the village and the Yacht Club hosting regular events on the estuary. There’s a large sandy beach and a handful of shops. Instow also offers an array of bars and restaurants, with views across the water. Watch the world go by and boats journeying along the estuary or spend time watching the wildlife on the tidal mud flats from the beach
