Long summer days in Ilfracombe do not have to end when the daytime attractions close. As golden light settles over the harbour, boats head out for evening cruises, the seafront funfair lights up and tables begin to fill around Fore Street, St James Place and the quay.
Whether you are planning a family evening, a relaxed meal or one last adventure before bedtime, here are eight brilliant things to do in Ilfracombe after 5pm.
1. Sail into the evening sunshine
What better way to end a day beside the sea than by heading out onto it?
The Ilfracombe Princess evening cruise is a relaxed 90-minute trip combining coastal views, music, wildlife spotting and the chance of a spectacular sunset over the water.
On selected summer evenings, Kittiwake Charters also heads east from Ilfracombe towards Combe Martin and the Hangmans. The 90-minute cruise passes Hele Bay, Watermouth and Broadsands before returning towards Ilfracombe as the sun begins to set.
Sailings depend on tides and weather, so check availability and book ahead. Remember to take an extra layer as it can feel cooler once you are out on the water.
2. Watch the sunset from Capstone or the harbour
Ilfracombe has plenty of places from which to watch the sky turn through shades of gold, pink and orange.
Capstone Hill offers sweeping views across the Bristol Channel and along the coastline, although reaching the top involves a short climb. For an easier option, enjoy a stroll along the level promenade around the base of Capstone Hill, with uninterrupted sea views and plenty of places to pause.
Wildersmouth seafront, the harbour and the pier are also lovely at golden hour, particularly when the evening light is reflected across the water. Lantern Hill provides another atmospheric viewpoint above the harbour, although the route includes steps and slopes.

3. Enjoy dinner and drinks around town
Ilfracombe has a tempting choice of places to eat, ranging from relaxed family meals and traditional pub favourites to fresh seafood, international flavours and special-occasion dining.
Choose from waterside tables around the harbour, independent restaurants along Fore Street or the pubs, cafés and places to eat around St James Place. You can also find takeaway fish and chips, cocktails overlooking the seafront and welcoming local pubs where live music and open-mic nights are often part of the evening.

4. Pick up a pizza
For a simple summer supper beside the sea, look out for Stoned Pizza UK outside The Landmark.
Pick up a freshly cooked pizza, find a spot overlooking Wildersmouth Beach and enjoy dinner with a sea breeze. It is an easy option after the funfair or while waiting for the sun to set.

5. Ride the big wheel at the summer funfair
Nothing says seaside summer quite like flashing lights, fairground music and a ride high above the waterfront.
The Ilfracombe Family Funfair brings rides, games and plenty of family excitement to Ilfracombe’s seafront during the school holidays. Take a spin on the big wheel for a bird’s-eye view across the town and sea, try your luck at the stalls or squeeze in one more ride before heading for dinner.
The 2026 Ilfracombe seafront funfair runs until 31 August, with published opening hours of 11am to 8pm. Times and rides may change because of weather or operational requirements.
6. Discover Watermouth Castle at twilight
Just a short drive from Ilfracombe, Twilight Evenings at Watermouth Castle offer a playful family evening among its gardens, outdoor attractions and illuminated rides.
Twilight entry begins at 5pm, with selected rides operating until 8pm and the event closing at 9pm. Expect outdoor play, bubbles drifting through the gardens and plenty of treats to keep everyone fuelled for more fun. The indoor castle is not included during these sessions.
Watermouth Castle also hosts free Sunset Sessions on selected Thursday evenings in August. These relaxed lakeside gatherings feature music, visiting food vendors and a lovely atmosphere as the sun goes down.

7. Tee off as the day cools
An evening visit to The Combes Golf Park is a brilliant way to bring out everyone’s competitive side.
Open until 9pm during the summer, the park offers footgolf, disc golf and Foot Pool. You can also visit the driving range, where TopTracer technology adds interactive games and challenges for complete beginners as well as experienced golfers.
There is also a licensed bar, kitchen and children’s play area, although food-service times may differ from the activity opening hours.
8. Take an evening wander around the harbour
Not every memorable summer evening needs a booking.
Stroll around the harbour, stop to see Damien Hirst’s Verity and watch the boats returning through the harbour entrance. Continue along the waterfront as the lights begin to twinkle around the quay, or wander towards St James Place for a drink, meal or ice cream.
Alternatively, take the level promenade around Capstone Hill and enjoy the changing colours across the Bristol Channel. Add fish and chips, a takeaway pizza or a drink overlooking the water and you have a wonderfully easy evening by the sea.
