SUMMARY:The Forces March
DESCRIPTION:The Forces March is a recreation of an epic 135-mile WW2 training march from Ilfracombe\, North Devon to Bulford\, Wiltshire. \nThe 1942 march was undertaken by men who would go on to spearhead the entire D-Day liberation with the assault on Pegasus Bridge \nOpen to runners and walkers\, military and civilians\, teams and individuals\, The Forces March is not a race – it’s an adventure! The event attracts people from all backgrounds and abilities who are inspired by the cause\, the scenery and the challenge. Many return year after year having enjoyed the truly unique event and an incredible bond which forms between those taking part. \nStarting from Ilfracombe Seafront the Forces March is one of the UK’s adventures and is held every year in aid of The Veterans Charity. The event follows the route of the legendary and arduous training march created when the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry were sent to Devon to train during World War Two and it was then decided to march the entire regiment back to Bulford\, naturally the event became fiercely contested between the companies. \nFrom Ilfracombe\, through Exmoor\, rural Somerset\, over the Quantock Hills\, across the Somerset Levels and then finally across Salisbury Plain to the finish at Bulford – a total of 134 miles – each stage will be at least 26.2 miles in length – that’s five full marathons in five days! Runners – Walkers – Hand Cyclists – Teams & Individuals all take part. \nThe Forces March is a unique\, life-changing event in which more than 1000 people have participated raising over £500\,000 to support veterans facing hardship and distress. All funds raised go to The Veterans Charity – Please support the marchers as they pass.

DESCRIPTION:The annual Jack-in-the-Green event is all about releasing the ‘spirit of summer\, a green clad procession complete with giants\, Brigid\, seen in spring as the manifestation of growth and renewal\, are joined by her partner\, Bres\, and a new tree giant\, Thorne\, and drummers makes its way through the town to the seafront. \nMustering from 10.45am in Wilder Road Car Park they parade through the High Street\, Fore Street & St James Place ending at the Clapping Circle above Wildersmouth Beach. \nAt the Clapping Circle where they dance the May Pole children from the audience are invited to join in the dancing\, then ‘Jack’ will be stripped of his leafy coverings to welcome the Spirit of Summer. \nEveryone is welcome to join or watch the May Day parade – just turn up and if possible wear something green. DESCRIPTION:The Ilfracombe Art Trail is an independent collaboration of artists\, makers and galleries all located in Ilfracombe\, mostly within a 20 minute walk of the High Street. We’ve even got a couple of venues well worth visiting a short drive away in Berrynarbor\, Ilfracombe. \nOur Art Trail provides an opportunity to visit venues of your choosing\, talk to artists and discover all things new and surprising! There are paintings\, sculpture\, photography\, jewellery\, printing\, textiles\, leather\, ceramics and much more. With our easy to follow map and guide you can discover art in some quirky places\, most within just a short walk of the High Street. \n\nCome and enjoy the work of local artists as well as some from further afield. Wander through our Victorian streets and contemplate the wide range of art on offer. You can even pause at some of the venues for tea and cake or visit one of the amazing artisan cafes around the town. \n\n\nAn open studio is a place where art is the focus\, offering visitors the opportunity to speak directly with the artist or just ponder and admire the works on show. For an artist\, it is the pleasure of talking with visitors and hopefully making valuable connections. \nThere is also\, of course\, the opportunity to purchase work and obtain information about artists’ events or courses\, if they have them to offer. \n\nThe Art Trail is a non-profit organisation\, predominantly paid for by participation fees. It is administered by a small team of volunteer members.

SUMMARY:Living Letters on Capstone Hill
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday 11 May Ilfracombe people will once again be gathering on Capstone Hill to create a LIVING LETTERS photo as they have done many times over the years to commemorate special times in history. \nThis is for the 80th anniversary of VE Day and you will see the letters cut into the hill before then. We appreciate VE Day is the 8 May but many local people will be at work and so we have arranged this for the following Sunday to allow as many as possible to join us. \nAll are welcome to participate\, locals\, visitors\, young and old! \nPlease arrive at around 11.45 on 11 May for a photo at 12 noon. \nWe look forward to seeing you!

SUMMARY:Devon County Show
DESCRIPTION:The Devon County Show is an agricultural show held annually at the Westpoint Arena and Showground in Clyst St Mary near Exeter.  It is one of a number of county shows in the United Kingdom. The show is a celebration of rural life in Devon\, and features country and livestock competitions\, a grand parade\, equine events\, local food and local drink\, traditional entertainment and rural crafts. \nThe show goes back to 1872\, when the Devon County Agricultural Association was formed to undertake promotion of the Devon County Show. It has been held annually ever since\, except for breaks during the two World Wars from 1940 to 1946 and 1915 to 1919\, and eleven occasions between 1890 and 1958\, when it was held in conjunction with Bath and West Show or the Royal Show when these were held in Devon. The show was first held at Victoria Park\, Mount Radford and then at various sites around the county until 1956\, when it moved to its first permanent site at Whipton Showground\, Exeter. The show moved to its present site at the Westpoint Arena in 1990.

We have something for all ages from 0-99 years… from our soft play centre to our well-loved birds of prey show. We have roller coasters\, bouncing pillows\, slides\, rides\, live shows and more… all set in the North Devon countryside near Clovelly. \nWe expect tickets for 24th May to sell out very quickly\, so don’t wait too long before booking. It’s going to be a lot of fun! \nMagical Tots will also be here on the day offering some fabulous entertainment and dance activities for little ones. \nPlease don’t travel to the park without tickets on the day.
