The May Day festivities mark the celebration of the arrival of Summer and the beginning of the new holiday season.
Ilfracombe's May Day Celebrations are now held on the Sunday of the May Day Bank Holiday weekend.
NOTE THAT IN 2017 THE PARADE ROUTE WILL BE DIFFERENT.
Muster from 11.00am at The Pier car park
11.30am Parade starts at the Pier Tavern
The route is along The Quay, St James Place, Ropery Road, Broad Street, Fore Street, High Street, Northfield Road and along Wilder Road to the Clapping Circle next to Wildersmouth Beach/Capstone. This means that not only have some of the roads changed but the parade will be in the opposite direction to previous years.
Once at the Clapping Circle 'Jack-in-the Green' will be stripped of his leafy coverings to release the 'Spirit of Summer'. All are welcome to join in the parade and the stripping of Jack. If possible wear something green.
There will be free workshops earlier in the year at Pip & Jim's Community Hall for anyone who wishes to get properly into the spirit of Mayday – mask making and bunting giants. Check the Ilfracombe Diaries for times and dates or contact the organisers.
