The Abbey lies across a beautiful valley leading to a remote Atlantic Cove, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Built in 1139AD, it was the last Abbey in the country to be dissolved Henry VIII gave it to the Sergeant of his wine cellar, whose descendants still live here today, hence, its wonderfully welcoming atmosphere. Visitors can wander at will around the house with its fascinating architecture & murals, important paintings by artists such as Gainsborough & Reynolds, fine furniture & porcelain collected over many generations & curiosities in the museum. Children love the Quiz wanderingpeacock, guinea fowl, donkeys & black sheep. Woodland gardens lead visitors via winding paths, created by Gertrude Jekyll, to the Bog Garden & recently discovered Fernery. Much of the garden had been lost since 1914 until recently when the present owners started a vast programme of restoration.Once again the 18th century Walled Gardens produce fruit & veg the borders & glass- houses are full of tender & rare plants.
