    • About:

Ilfracombe museum is one of the top-rated museums in the whole of Devon and was awarded a Tripadvisor certificate of Excellence in 2013 and 2014. It has an amazingly varied collection arranged over eight rooms. The museum is laid out on ground floor level and is accessible to wheelchairs.
There is a tremendous amount to see in the museum, and something to appeal to all ages. Children aged 16 and under have FREE entry when accompanied by an adult. Families and children can enjoy following a quiz around the museum, and there are objects for little ones to handle. There is a ship to shore radio station where you can have a go at tapping out Morse code. Many younger visitors are fascinated by the famous two-headed kitten and huge African python, some are not so sure about the cupboard of pickled bats! Adults and children can have a go at brass rubbing too.
Highlights of the collection include the many drawers of insects and butterflies from Britain and South America, collected by our founder, Mervyn Palmer, in the early 1900s. We also have African beadwork and early South American pottery. Closer to home, there are displays of local maritime and military history, a display about Ilfracombe's railway, and a room devoted to Lundy island.
Researchers into Ilfracombe's past can access our extensive photographic and newspaper archives, and parish and census records, on purchasing a researcher's ticket. The museum has a popular gift shop stocked with jewellery, children's toys, books and cards, gems and minerals, replica coins and medals.
The museum is an entirely self-supported charity and your entrance fee directly supports its work. For those who want to support the museum and have free entry for the year, there is a Friends of Ilfracombe museum membership scheme- email or phone for details
